Choosing a Floor Color

The color of the flooring in a room will affect how it’s perceived. Color can be used to make a room look larger, appear smaller, and feel more welcoming. There are also some basic color design rules that interior decorators utilize to tie the entire room together. The following tips will be helpful in choosing the best color flooring.

Color Scheme

The colors a room is decorated with, combined with the wall colors, will impact floor color. Choose lighter floor colors for a happier vibe. Grey tones are timeless and create a sense of calm. Black has become universally associated with luxury and it’s also a great way to make a bold or dramatic statement.

Never try to choose a floor color based on an empty room. The color of the furniture will have an impact on the overall feel of the room. Natural and neutral colors will highlight the furnishings, red tones will elicit a luxury feel and are typically used with heavier furniture styles, and flooring with brown hints or tints are generally used with interiors that speak to country living.

Let the Light In

The illumination in rooms changes with the time of day and angle of the sun. Artificial light will make floors appear differently than natural light. Color choices for floors should take into consideration whether the room is used throughout the day, if its use is primarily during the night, if it’s a children’s room, and the amount of light within the room.

Room Size

Lighter, more natural floor colors will make a room look larger and less cramped. These fall into the beige spectrum for tiles and linoleum, while shades in light oaks work better when working with hardwood floors. To make a room appear smaller, dark and warm tones are best and also contribute to a sense of coziness.
