Do you Need a Permit for new Flooring?

Every homeowner knows the wide variety of rules, regulations and ordinances that can apply to any home improvement project. There are numerous projects that require a permit before contractors even begin work. However, installing new flooring isn’t one of them. You can have new flooring installed in your home without a permit. The one exception would be installing stone, tile or similar materials in a second story.

There are multiple updates and home improvements that don’t require a permit to perform. They include installing flooring, painting or wallpapering, replacing a faucet or installing new countertops. The reasons that a permit is required for work is when it will affect the safety of the home or when it will substantially affect the appearance of the property.

A myriad of projects will require a permit. Some examples are heating and cooling systems, fences, electrical and plumbing work, or the installation of new windows or skylights. The same is true for decks, porches and balconies, along with roofing, foundations, major remodeling projects, additions, and anything that will make a structural change.

Major landscaping also requires a permit, but simply planting flowers isn’t one of them. Planting vines or trees typically won’t, but you should be mindful of the spread and size of either when it matures. The contractor should know the prevailing standards, requirements, and be able to obtain the proper permits for major landscaping.

If you’re simply installing new carpeting or any type of new flooring, you won’t need a permit to make the changes within your home. You’re free to choose any type of flooring you desire that will best suit your decorating desires or needs.

The one exception is if you’re determined to install heavier types such as tile, marble or stone in an upper story. Most homes are not designed for the heavier weight of those materials and the structure will require significant changes to withstand the weight.
