25 Aug Ways to Avoid Scratching new Floors
Over time, every floor will accumulate some scratches and scuffs, especially in homes with children and pets. Most people would be surprised at the number of ways that floors can be scratched and damaged. From small pebbles brought in on the bottom of shoes to moving furniture, there are multiple ways in which a new floor can sustain damage.
One of the most obvious ways in which floors become scratched is when furniture or appliances are moved. Delivery services will take precautions to avoid damaging floors. When individuals are relocating furniture themselves, don’t drag or push furniture. Furnishings with wheels will significantly reduce the potential for damage.
It can be helpful to place cardboard down along the path of where furniture or appliances will be transported. Always use a hand truck whenever possible to move heavy appliances and furniture. Area rugs can provide a stylish decorating tool while providing a soft surface to keep the legs of furniture off the floor in its “permanent” location. Furniture pads are another option. Constructed of felt, rubber or cork, they stick to the bottom of furniture legs.
A mat placed outside entry doors will reduce the amount of debris brought in from the outdoors. The tread on the underside of shoes and boots collect tiny stones and other hard items that can be deposited on floors. As people move it about, that debris can scratch floors. It’s always a good idea to use a rug or mat in high traffic areas.
There are multiple types of sealers that can be professionally applied to flooring that will minimize the potential for damage. It can be helpful to choose engineered hardwood instead of solid planks for hardwood floors. Resistance to scratching will also depend on the type of wood from which the flooring is created.
Professional movers suggest disassembling the furniture to be moved whenever possible. It can help make the furniture lighter so two people can comfortably relocate it. That may include taking a bed frame apart or removing dresser drawers. Individuals can also invest in what’s known as gliders or sliders that fit underneath furniture legs to make moving things easier.
