31 Jul Things to Consider when Choosing your Flooring Material
Choosing new flooring can be exciting with all the colors, patterns, textures, styles and materials available. While you may be drawn to colors, patterns and other aesthetic elements, there are a myriad of pragmatic matters to consider when choosing your flooring material.
Health Conditions
If you or someone in your household has allergies or respiratory conditions, you’ll want easy-care flooring that doesn’t trap allergens. Carpeting is comfortable, but it holds dirt and allergens that can aggravate health conditions. The age of family members is also a consideration. Slippery flooring can present a danger for older individuals and those with mobility issues.
Kids and Pets
Kids and pets can be hard on flooring and durability is essential. The durability factor will also be a concern if you entertain often and have high-traffic areas. You’ll want a material that resists spills, stains, scuffs and scratches. You’ll also need flooring that’s comfortable for kids to play and pets to lay on. Carpeting is soft and warm, while tile and similar materials are cold.
Light
Certain colors and patterns can make a room feel lighter, darker, smaller or larger. Lighter colors can make use of natural lighting from windows and skylights.
Maintenance
Some flooring materials have maintenance needs beyond simple vacuuming and mopping that can be costly. Hardwood flooring will need to be refinished every decade or so and stone tiles will require resealing periodically.
Moisture
Bathrooms, kitchens, entryways and laundry rooms are moisture magnets. Tile, laminate and luxury vinyl are good options where spills and humidity are a concern. Hardwood will warp, while carpeting may mold or mildew when damp.
Which Floor?
Those that have a multi-level house need to be aware that porcelain, marble and stone tiles can’t be installed on anything but the ground floor due to its weight. It would require significant bracing and reinforcement to support the weight. Similarly, hardwood or carpeting aren’t a good idea for basements if it’s prone to leakage or flooding after a rain unless the basement has been sealed.
