5 Different Types of Carpeting

Choosing carpeting can be a highly confusing endeavor. Other than textures and length of the fibers, carpeting looks pretty much the same to the untrained eye. There are five basic types, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. There are multiple lengths and ways that fibers can be cut to create texture, and materials ranging from nylon to wool. Never make a decision about carpeting online. Individuals need to be able to see and feel the floor covering.

Cable

This type of carpeting has long, thick fibers. It provides a surface that’s very comfortable to walk on, but isn’t a good choice for rooms that have a lot of foot traffic.

Frieze

The long fibers of frieze carpeting don’t spring back well from footprints and isn’t a good option for high traffic areas. The most extreme type of frieze carpeting is more popularly known as shag or California shag due to the extra length of the fibers. However, it tends to hide dirt well.

Plush

For those that desire carpeting with a more formal appearance, the smooth and even texture is ideal. The fibers are very densely packed and shorter than a saxony cut. It provides a rich and luxurious look.

Saxony

Highly popular, it has a smooth, dense and soft finish combined with longer fibers that are twisted for extra body. Furniture will leave dents in the carpeting and footprints will linger where it’s been walked on. It’s constructed with fibers that are relatively short and the carpeting can be more expensive than other types.

Textured

The fibers of textured carpeting are cut in uneven lengths. The result is a rougher surface that withstands medium to high traffic areas without being crushed down. It’s often referred to as trackless carpeting, uncut pile or Berber pile for a specific type of pile common in North Africa. It’s resistant to stains, easy to clean, and won’t show indentations resulting from footprints, furniture or marks left by vacuum cleaners.
