Green Resources for Flooring

One of the newest trends in flooring is materials made from recyclable and/or sustainable resources. Modern manufacturing methods mean that recyclable and sustainable doesn’t necessarily mean more expensive. The flooring is attractive and contains some surprising properties.

Modern manufacturing processes are enabling companies to produce flooring made of a myriad of materials. Flooring is being created from jute and wool to sisal and seagrass. The following are just some of the options available.

Bamboo

bamboo hardwood floors for your Coral Springs homeOfficially categorized as a grass, only the stalks are harvested and they regenerate in about five years. It’s durable and acts as a sound buffer. Available in multiple shades, it has a Janka hardness rating three times that of oak. It stands up to high-traffic areas and can last up to 25 years. Bamboo is moisture, allergen and insect resistant.

Cork

The bark of the cork tree is used to manufacture flooring. The tree isn’t cut down and the bark grows back in approximately three years. It contains anti-microbial properties, repels insects, is fire retardant, and good for people with allergies. It dampens noise and depending on the quality of the flooring, cork can last 10-30 years.

Concrete

An old concrete floor can be ground and polished to create flooring that can last for over 50 years. It’s available in colors and a good solution for those with respiratory conditions. Polished concrete is stain and moisture resistant and great for high-traffic areas. It’s slip-resistant, require little maintenance, and its high reflectivity minimizes lighting requirements.

Glass Tiles

Bottles and other types of glass are increasingly being used to create glass tiles that are aesthetically pleasing, durable, and resists mold and mildew. Glass tiles resist moisture and available in an almost limitless number of colors. It reflects light, enabling individuals to take better advantage of natural illumination.

Reclaimed Wood

Rather than cutting down trees for new flooring, reclaimed wood is salvaged from sources ranging from old flooring and antique barns to used whisky barrels. With reclaimed wood, it’s possible for individuals to obtain types of wood that are no longer available and rare varieties. The wood is sanded and refinished before it’s installed in its new home.

Recycled Carpet

Some carpeting choices are made entirely from recycled materials. Manufactured with PET fiber, it’s a type of polyester made from recycled plastic. It’s a good choice for anyone with allergies, cost-effective, and resists fading. The carpeting is very soft, easy to clean and maintain, and available in a myriad of colors. Depending on the amount of foot traffic, it can last for 20 years or more.

Stone

Typically installed as tiles, reclaimed stone is popular as it’s a natural material that doesn’t require stains or other chemicals in the manufacturing process. It’s aesthetically pleasing and appropriate in-home or business environments. Stone is a non-slip surface, withstands high-traffic volumes and easy to maintain.

Tile

Recycled tile is fire and scratch-resistant. Extremely durable, it can be glazed to prevent the absorption of liquids. Tile won’t hold dust, allergens, or harbor mold. It’s available as ceramic and porcelain tiles that can be installed on floors, walls and countertops. It makes use of existing tile and requires lesser amounts of new material to be added for the finished product.
