How to Clean Grout in Tile Flooring

A tile floor is attractive and gives any room a sophisticated appearance. Grout is applied to hold tiles in place. Eventually, individuals will notice that the grout has become dull and dingy. That’s because the grout is at a slightly lower level than the tile, allowing dirt to deposit in the crevasses.

The dirt that builds up in the crevasses can make an otherwise luxury floor look old and worn. Individuals can clean the grout themselves with a homemade solution or a commercial formula.

Professional Cleaning

Conversely, anyone that feels hesitant about cleaning their own grout can hire a professional. A professional cleaning service can remove 96.5 percent of dirt and stains, and will identify any place where grout has been damaged. Using a bristle brush isn’t necessary. If a brush is used, it shouldn’t be over a medium bristle. Anything stiffer can create additional problems.

Cleaning

The process begins with sweeping the floor to remove surface dirt. Homeowners can use a pre-pared commercial grout cleaner of choice. Alternately, a cleaning solution of hot, soapy water and dish washing soap can be used. Apply the cleaning solution with a sponge mop or towel.

Cleaning Solution

The most effective homemade solution for cleaning grout is easily made using items most people already have in their home. One of the most effective is a solution of ½ cup baking soda, ¼ cup hydrogen peroxide and 1 teaspoon of dish soap. Use a spoon to apply the solution to the grout or a spray bottle. Let it set for 5 to 10 minutes. Scrub the grout if desired and wipe clean.

Set and Remove

Using bleach and harsh cleaners is never recommended, as they can break down the grout and the flooring’s sealer. Leave the cleaning solution on for a few minutes before removing it with a sponge mop or towel. All that’s left is to let the floor dry naturally.
