Common Problems with Grout

Grout is the glue that holds tiles together whether they’re on a floor, bathroom wall or kitchen backsplash. Grout can be applied in a variety of colors to enhance the appearance of a number of areas. However, the substance is porous and unsealed grout can be subject to some very specific problems that include the following.

Cloudy/Milky Tiles

Any tile assembly can take on a cloudy or milky appearance and the culprit is usually the wrong cleaning product was used on a particular type of tile. It’s important that a tile expert be consulted to rectify the damage and provide information on the best cleaners for the specific type of tile that’s installed.

Dirty Grout

Ceramic Tile vs. Porcelain Tile: The DifferenceWhile attempting to keep grout clean, many people unwittingly create more damage. Since grout is porous, it will absorb liquid. Using the wrong cleaning solution can instantly stain grout and surrounding tiles. Another issue is that grout sets lower than the tile level and dirt collects in low spots.

Hollow Tiles

This is a problem that arises when the adhesive doesn’t bond the tiles to the surface properly. It occurs when there were gaps where the adhesive wasn’t applied thoroughly to the entire tile. Hollow tiles can do any number of things, from lifting away from the surface to cracking and breaking. While it’s possible to have a specialist inject more adhesive under the tiles, the process is usually unsuccessful and the best solution is to have the area completely retiled.

Mold

This is perhaps the No. 1 complaint about tile. Damp, humid environments and little ventilation are the ideal breeding ground for mold. Once mold invades into the grout, there’s little that can be done. The grout will continue to deteriorate and create additional damage over time. Before trying to create a remedy or install new tile, it’s important to discover where water is leaching into the surroundings.

Stains/White Residue

Both conditions can be the result of minerals in water that has penetrated underneath the tile and crystalized. Removing either problem can be expensive and will require the services of a professional. Trying to achieve a do-it-yourself solution can actually cause more extensive damage.
