Considerations When Choosing Marble Flooring

Marble is one of the most elegant floorings that individuals can choose for their home or business. It’s expensive, but well worth the cost for its appearance and durability. However, there are some things that anyone considering marble flooring should consider to ensure the flooring will fit their needs and décor.

Real vs Artificial

Always deal with a reputable company that’s an ISO-certified supplier and ask if the marble is natural or manmade. Natural marble is quarried in locations around the world in solid slabs. Natural marble is available in red, green, gold, orange, black, brown, white, gray and pink.

Artificial marble is manmade and comprised of natural marble chips and powder, along with glue and coloring. It’s uniform in color, without the veining of other minerals that occurs in natural marble.

Slip Resistance

Floors of marble tend to be slippery and the type of finish will have an impact on the slip factor. Tiles with a highly polished finish will be more slippery and can pose a hazard for children, older individuals and pets.

Maintenancehardwood flooring

A porous material, marble requires more maintenance than some other types of flooring. It’s susceptible to staining and damage from moisture. It will need to be treated with a sealer every 6 to 12 months to protect it.

Mismatched Tiles

Tiles cut from matching slabs will have veining patterns that match. However, if its not laid correctly, the patterns won’t be complementary. It’s just one of the reasons why a professional stone professional should be engaged.

Finish

Marble can be finished in a high gloss or matte finish. Polishing gives it a glowing or radiant appearance and the veining will be more prominent. A matte finish receives less polishing and isn’t as shiny.

Physical Appearance

Look for stains, cracks and artificial colors. Artificial marble colors will begin to fade soon after installation. Each tile should be uniform in size and thickness.
