Flooring That is Usually More Expensive

There are flooring options to fit every décor and budget, and it can be extremely difficult for individuals to make a choice with so many available options. Laminate is slightly more expensive than luxury vinyl and both are usually more expensive than carpeting. All three are less expensive than porcelain tile, with hardwood representing the costliest flooring. However, if money is no object, there are even more expensive flooring selections from which to choose.

Natural Stone

Natural stone, such as marble, is by far the most expensive flooring. When most people think of flooring that’s opulent, sophisticated and decadent, stone is the first material that comes to mind. It conjures visions of palaces.

There are multiple types of natural stone from which to choose that includes marble, granite and travertine, along with slate, sandstone and limestone. Stone is dense, heavy, and usually has to be transported over long distances, which adds to the cost. The tiles can easily run $15 to $20 per sq. ft. without installation costs.

Designer Ceramic Tiles

Kuhn Flooring and Your New Tile FloorsDesigner mosaic flooring can be crafted from materials encompassing Italian-made tiles, hand-crafted tiles, glass, pebble, and reclaimed antique tiles. Average quality tiles can cost $10 per sq. ft., while the highest quality tiles begin at $30 per sq. ft. and increase from there – and that’s before installation.

Exotic Hardwood

Depending on the type of hardwood desired, costs can average $12 to $22 per sq. ft. Rare woods, such as ebony, begins at a price point of about $120 per sq. ft. and sandalwood is sold at $370 per lb. – not by the foot – and that doesn’t include installation costs.

Reclaimed Hardwood

This is wood reclaimed from old houses and barns. It can include solid oak, elm, pine, walnut and even hickory. Pine, ash and oak can range from $4 to $7 per sq. ft., while elm, hickory and walnut can begin at $10 to $15 per sq. ft. – all before installation costs are added in.
