There are dozens of vacuum cleaner models on the market and it can be difficult to decide which is best for a specific type of flooring. Much will depend on the amount you want to spend and how much time you want to invest in cleaning tasks. You’ll also need to know if you prefer a canister type, upright, robotic, corded or battery-operated model.

Also up for consideration is if your home has carpeting, hardwood flooring, vinyl, laminate, stone or porcelain. The suction needed to clean carpeting isn’t the same level required for tile or hardwood floors. If your home has multiple types of flooring, you’ll want a vacuum that minimizes the work and is versatile. Selecting a vacuum is a very individualized choice.

Uprights, particularly those with bags, are beneficial if you have stairs since they’re more maneuverable. They work well on carpeting and hard surfaces. Stick models have become increasingly popular in recent years and are great for messes that require immediate attention, but don’t work as well for whole house cleaning.

Robotic vacuums offer a set-it-and-forget it solution and they can also be controlled via smartphone. State-of-the-art robotic vacuums will empty themselves, but you’ll still need to remember to empty the receptacle and they can’t climb stairs, though they can clean carpeting and smooth floors.

Upright vacuums are typically less expensive than canister types, but are better for cleaning carpets. They require less space to store, but can be heavy to push and pull. Canister vacuums are generally less noisy, good at cleaning carpets, and offer the ability to clean drapes and furnishings, though they’re bulkier and can be difficult to store.

Stick vacs have long handles, are great for immediate messes, lightweight and easy to store. Many are battery powered and if you forget to charge them you’re out of luck. They’re noisier than other types of vacuums and the dust/dirt receptacle is fairly small. Robotic options don’t do as well at cleaning carpeting, but they offer a superior level of convenience.
