Guide to Floor Coloring: Light vs. Dark

Choosing a flooring color is a subjective decision, but certain colors are better for achieving specific goals. Darker colored flooring tends to be perceived as more stylish, sophisticated and will hide imperfections. For those interested in practical alternatives, lighter-colored floors typically show dirt less and may even retain their appearance longer.

Dust, Dirt and Debris

A major consideration is cleaning. The color of the flooring has the ability to hide or highlight things encompassing dents, dust bunnies, footprints and pet hair, scuffs, scratches and stains. Debris can quickly accumulate depending on the amount of foot traffic, frequency of entertaining and other lifestyle factors. Every type of detritus that will find its way into a house or business will contrast with a dark colored floor.

Scale

Get Luxury Vinyl from Kuhn Flooring, Today!Small and even medium-sized rooms can appear larger and more spacious with lighter colored flooring and that’s especially true if the ceilings are low. Installing lighter-hued flooring on a diagonal track or parallel to the room’s longest wall will make the room look more expansive. The appearance is amplified in combination with lighter colored walls. That’s especially beneficial for traditionally smaller rooms such as bathrooms, bedrooms and utility rooms.

For large rooms that feel like a giant cave, dark-colored flooring will make the space seem smaller and cozier. The sense is enhanced when high ceilings are present. Dark flooring also results in a room that has a warmer and more intimate feel. A word of warning when it comes to a man cave of smaller proportions. Dark flooring will give the impression of an actual cave, particularly if the room isn’t well lit. The effect can be offset with light-colored walls.

Styles and Fading

Light flooring best complements styles such as Scandinavian, Colonial, Modern and even Farm. Dark flooring is best for Revolutionary, French, and Indian and Asian themed décor. Also, be aware that flooring is subject to fading from UV rays entering from windows and it will be more obvious on dark flooring.
