Hardwood floors are beautiful, but they’re also susceptible to dents and scratches. Many owners of hardwood flooring would be surprised to know that an ordinary steam iron is their best friend for repairing damage to their wood flooring.
Steam is effective for repairing dents to hardwood flooring, provided it isn’t too deep. The area to be treated must first be sanded to remove the polyurethane coating. Begin by folding a clean, damp dish towel into quarters and placing it over the dent.
The next step is to apply the iron. Use the highest setting on the iron and set the iron on top of the dish towel. Be careful not to let the hot iron touch the floor – only the dish towel. Leave it on for approximately 1 minute and check the progress.
The steam generated causes the wood to swell. Individuals are basically “pulling” the dent out of the flooring. Depending on the size and depth of the dent, it may be necessary to repeat the process.
While there’s no absolute guarantee of success, it’s the best method for a DIY repair at home. Individuals should also be aware that the situation can be made worse and further damage can be inflicted if too much moisture is applied or the iron is left on too long. Steam can turn some types of flooring finishes white. If possible, try the method on a hidden area first.
Once the dent has been removed, allow the area to thoroughly dry. The treated area will need a light sanding to ensure its flat and a new coat of protective polyurethane will also need to be applied.
It’s important that individuals differentiate between dents and scratches. Wood putty or a small amount of tinted paste wax applied directly into the scratch are the best solutions for scratches.
