21 Oct Is Carpet Flooring a Thing of the Past?
In days gone by, the height of luxury used to be carpeting – a classy floor covering reserved for the wealthy and elite. Times have changed dramatically. With the current trend toward hardwood flooring and the desire for low maintenance surfaces, many people don’t even consider carpeting for their flooring needs. Whether carpeting is a thing of the past depends on the perspective of the individual.
Wall-to-wall carpeting once reigned supreme in homes across the nation. Since the 1970s, carpeting sales have dropped. Instead of 60 percent of sales, it now accounts for about 1/3 of all sales. It’s still a popular feature in many bedrooms but has disappeared from other areas of the home. Even offices are eschewing carpeting in favor of hardwood and tile.
There are multiple causes for the decline in carpeting sales. The top reasons include:
- Carpeting was overused during its heyday
- It requires more care and maintenance than tile, vinyl or hardwood
- It holds dirt and allergens more than other types of flooring
- The material is equated with the “working class,” particularly by Millennials
- Carpeting must be entirely replaced periodically
- People are working more hours and don’t have time to clean
In some circles, carpeting is making a comeback. Instead of installing tiles or hardwood and then spreading area rugs over it that slip and slide, there’s actually a significant number of people that are returning to the floor covering. Carpeting is available in new colors, styles and patterns that can add to any décor. It’s a soft surface for children to play on and it’s warmer than other types of flooring making it attractive for seniors.
For those that still enjoy the soft feel of carpeting on their feet and appreciate its insulating properties, there’s good news – the carpeting of the future exists now. It’s 100 percent hypoallergenic and it actively works to neutralize household odors. The carpeting fibers don’t absorb moisture so spills have less of an impact and it’s 100 percent recyclable.
Carpeting isn’t dead or obsolete. It’s still being sold, installed, and enjoyed by millions of people. While hardwood still remains the king of flooring, carpet companies are working hard to improve carpeting in unique ways. An increasing number of people are turning to large living room rugs for the décor and flooring needs that are just a few increments away from whole-room carpeting.
