Is Epoxy Good for Garage Floors

Concrete is extremely strong and durable, but it’s also a porous material meaning that liquids on the surface can enter. Garage floors are subject to multiple hazards ranging from water, chemicals and staining to chipping from dropped tools. An epoxy coating is an excellent way to preserve and protect a garage floor.

An epoxy coating can last up to 20 years and the substance is used in industries ranging from commercial garages to food production plants. It’s able to resist oil, chemicals, scratching, acidic substances, and is resistant to impacts. Another benefit is that it’s easy to maintain and keep clean.

The level of protection will depend on the type of epoxy coating that’s chosen. There are three common types. One is water-based, fairly thin, and deemed a green solution. There are also solvent-based coatings that are thicker and more durable than eco-friendly solutions. Individuals can also choose a 100 percent epoxy coating that offers the highest level of durability available. A polyurethane top coat can be applied if desired.

One disadvantage of epoxy is that it’s sensitive to UV rays and can become discolored. It’s generally not a problem in garages, unless the sun shines directly on the floor when the door is lifted. Individuals can also have a UV-stable top coat added to the epoxy they choose.

Epoxy coatings shouldn’t be confused with garage floor painting. Epoxy is a thermosetting resin that’s harder than paint, bonds to the concrete surface, and hardens into a protective layer that’s able to withstand high traffic areas and the weight of heavy vehicles.

Individuals may also want to consider a polyaspartic garage floor covering, as it provides the same benefits as epoxy, is resistant to UV light, and cures quicker and at lower temperatures. It’s a relatively new advancement and offers an alternative to epoxy.
