Popular Stone Tiles

The term “stone tile” typically brings to mind marble or granite, but there are dozens of popular stone materials of which many individuals aren’t even aware. The most popular are ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone. Each can be used in homes or businesses to great effect and some have striking similarities. Leading the pack in the stone tile market are the following.

Ceramic

Red, brown or white clay is used in the manufacture of ceramic tiles. It offers the opportunity to create more intricate patterns and designs when decorating than with porcelain. An increasing number of professional designers are using it as wall coverings in addition to floors. The tiles are highly versatile and available in an extensive array of colors, designs, patterns, and textures, including the appearance of wood.

Porcelain

porcelain2Porcelain tiles are very similar to ceramic. The primary difference is the amount of moisture it absorbs. Porcelain is denser and absorbs less water should a spill occur. The flooring is manufactured using clay, sand, and feldspar and it’s fired using a higher temperature making it denser.

Designers are using porcelain on floors and walls in homes and commercial properties, but structures must have special construction to accommodate the weight. Porcelain can also be used for outdoor applications such as patios, but should be textured as it will be slippery when wet.

Stone

The use of stone for flooring has a history that dates back centuries. Natural stone flooring encompasses marble, granite, sandstone, flagstone, and limestone. Stone is the most expensive, but it’s the most durable for high traffic areas. It provides a slip-resistant surface, is stain resistant, and available in a wealth of colors and patterns.

Natural stone must be treated with a sealing agent to prevent it from staining and absorbing moisture. The subflooring over which stone is installed must be reinforced to handle the weight and be completely level or stone will crack. It’s not recommended for upper stories without appropriate reinforcement.
