Should you use the Same Flooring Throughout the House?

One of the biggest questions individuals have when choosing flooring is whether to use the same flooring throughout their entire home or choose different patterns or colors for each room. Using the same flooring in every room of the home creates a look with clean lines.

CarpetHowever, there’s no rule that says you can’t use different flooring. The only real problem with two different floorings is if you use two that are almost, but not quite the same. It will have a jarring effect. One exception is carpeting. Wood flooring works great with carpeting, for instance, but don’t combine two different kinds of carpeting.

It’s also important to consider your décor. Unless you want to do some major redecorating, select patterns, colors, and materials that complement the existing style and color scheme. You’ll want your flooring to match and coordinate with the décor rather than clashing with it.

If you decide to use two different floorings, always make the change at existing natural barriers, walls, and divides to maintain continuity. Never change the flooring in the middle of a room whether the home has a large open floor plan or smaller rooms.

Always try to fit the flooring to the room and how it will be used. Carpeting provides living rooms, family rooms and bedrooms with a cozy feel. Floors will feel warmer for children and the elderly to walk and play on. Tiles and luxury vinyl is a better choice where spills and moisture could be a problem.

Keep color in mind when using two different floorings. Placing contrasting colors or patterns against one another will create dissonance. The flooring in your home will reflect your personal tastes and preferences as much as the furniture and wall hangings. However, if you’re sprucing up the floor in anticipation of selling the home, hardwood floors are by far the most preferred. Homes with hardwood flooring typically command a higher resale value.
