Tips for Adding an Accent Rug to your New Floor

Accent rugs serve many practical purposes and enhance décor. They’re an often-overlooked accessory that adds warmth and personality to rooms. Accent rugs are appropriate for bare and carpeted flooring and should either highlight the rest of the décor or create a contrast with the style or layout of the room. The following are some tips for using these valuable decorating accessories for any home.

Small Spaces

In small rooms, keep accent rugs to 2×3-ft. or smaller. They’re typically used in front of sinks or stoves in the kitchen, along with tubs, showers and sinks in the bathroom. Small accent rugs are also beneficial when placed just inside doorways to catch moisture, dirt and debris that can enter on shoes.

Large Rooms

A Buying Guide for Laminate FlooringA larger room requires a large accent rug. They’re typically utilized to cover seating areas – or the entire area where the furniture sets – and to create a sense of coziness. Small rugs in large spaces will give the impression of “floating” and look particularly awkward. An accent rug should be scaled to the size and shape of the area it will define.

Patterns

Using a patterned accent rug over a patterned floor is a definite no-no. If the flooring has a pattern, choose a solid-colored accent rug. A patterned accent rug is a great way to liven up solid colored flooring.

Color

Accent rugs can add a splash of complementary color to offset furnishings in dark hues or lighten the look of a dark room. Overall, the color of the accent rug should complement the current color scheme.

Comfort

Flooring options such as tile, porcelain and hardwood floors are popular, but they can also be cold and uncomfortable for children, seniors and pets. Accent rugs provide a decorative touch that improves comfort.

Materials

Sisal, jute and synthetic materials are excellent choices for entryways, kitchens and bathrooms. They can be shaken in between cleanings to release dirt and debris. The materials will quickly absorb moisture, but will need to be thoroughly cleaned and dried before the rugs can be used again. For a truly luxurious look within the home, wool is the most popular choice, though it can be more costly than other materials.

Carpeting

An accent rug is an excellent way to protect carpeting in high-traffic areas. A longer, thicker rug adds a sense of luxury when paired with short pile carpeting. A woven or low-profile rug is best for plusher styles of carpeting.

Caution – Slippery Surface

One of the primary reasons that people don’t utilize area rugs is that they can be prone to slipping and sliding on bare floors. A non-slip rug pad is effective, remains invisible to sight, and aids in preventing damaging friction from furnishings. For smaller accent rugs, carpet tape is an easy solution to prevent rug movement.
