What Are the Best Flooring Options for the Kitchen?

Due to the activities that take place in kitchens, the rooms receive a lot of abuse and are prone to spills and staining. Choosing a flooring option for the kitchen can seem like an overwhelming task with so many choices from which to select. The flooring choice will ultimately be determined by multiple factors that includes the homeowner’s needs, preferences and budget.

Tile

Ceramic and porcelain tiles are one of the best choices for kitchen floors for a variety of reasons. The material is highly fire-resistant and won’t burn, smoke or release toxic fumes. Tile is an eco-friendly option and the material can be recycled.

The range of colors, patterns and tile sizes is extensive. Tile can be fashioned to appear as hardwood flooring to high end marble. It’s easy to maintain a hygienic environment as they’re easily cleaned. If a tile is damaged, it can be replaced without affecting the rest of the floor.

Polished Concrete

Widely used abroad, concrete is polished to a high shine for flooring in homes. It can be customized in a variety of ways and color can be added. The surface can last for over 50 years and provides an elegant appearance. It’s easy to clean, maintain, and resistant to moisture and staining.

Luxury Vinyl

The flooring is offered in planks and tiles that emulate the look of hardwood flooring to high-end stone. It’s a comfortable surface on which to stand and walk, waterproof, and easy to clean and maintain.

Laminate

A less expensive option, laminate planks can imitate the appearance of hardwood flooring. Some types are waterproof.

Cork

The material isn’t widely used in U.S. homes, but it has some surprising properties that makes it worth considering. It’s naturally resistant to mold, mildew, termites and fire. Cork is a budget-friendly alternative offered in tiles and planks. It dampens noise, is soft to walk on, and is moisture resistant.
