What Floor Types Require Waxing?

Many types of flooring will benefit from being waxed and even require periodic waxing, while wax should never be applied to other materials. For floors that do require waxing, the frequency will vary depending on the type of flooring.

Hardwood

It doesn’t matter if the floor is constructed of new, vintage, recycled or parquet, all types of hardwood flooring require periodic waxing to maintain their shine. It protects the wood from stains, dents and helps hide scratches. Wooden flooring is porous and wax seals the pores. Depending on the amount of traffic and wear and tear, hardwood floors will need to be waxed every 6 to 18 months. Strip the old wax off first.

The exception is engineered hardwood and wood laminate. They’re manufactured with an acrylic finish from the factory. All the flooring needs is a damp mopping with an approved floor cleaner. Be careful not to saturate the flooring.

floor installationVinyl (VCT)

Vinyl composition tiles are different than other types of vinyl flooring. It will need to be waxed as soon as its installed. The wax must be stripped before rewaxing and should be done every 6 to 12 months.

Terra Cotta

Any type of unglazed floor tile is typically sealed and waxed immediately after its installed. Waxing helps protect the surface from stains and makes the color more vivid. It waterproofs the tiles, while creating a non-slip surface. The previous wax will need to be stripped and the floor thoroughly cleaned before a fresh coat of wax is applied. Rewax every 1 to 2 years. Ceramic tile shouldn’t be waxed. Apply a sealer once a year to protect the tiles and grout.

Waxing Tips

Liquid or paste wax can be used. Paste wax must be applied by hand with a soft cotton cloth or cheesecloth. Use a sponge mop to apply liquid wax or use one of the newer style mops with a microfiber pad. The same is true when an acrylic finish is applied. Waxing can be a tedious process that must be done properly. It’s often much easier and efficient to hire a floor specialist.
