Does Tile Size Matter

Does Tile Size Matter?

There are little known secrets to tile size that individuals can use to their advantage. There are a number of techniques that can trick the eye and help rooms appear larger or cozier. However, there are also other factors to consider and a small room doesn’t mean anyone has to limit themselves to small tiles.

The size, shape and texture of the tiles that home and business owners select will impact the appearance of the room or overall environment, along with the way that they’re placed. Laying tiles diagonally in a narrow room will make it appear larger. To give a room a more intimate appearance, rectangular tiles placed around the outside borders will create a different perspective for viewers.

Most tiles are 12×12 inches in size, but they’re also available in 16, 18, and 24 inch sizes. Larger tiles will make a room look larger and there will be fewer grout lines for a more open, expansive and streamlined appearance.

Simply choosing larger tiles isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Larger tiles aren’t always appropriate for very small rooms. When used in locations such as bathrooms, laundry rooms, or mud rooms, it’s important that the floor tiles not exceed the size of the wall tiles.

Conversely, smaller tiles can aid in the transition from one room to the other. Smaller size tiles are also beneficial for providing aesthetically pleasing flow throughout each room within small floor plans.

Tiles come in a variety of sizes and one often overlooked option is linear tile. The tiles are typically 9×36 inches in size and can provide the look of hardwood floors or stone. Linear tiles add depth to rooms, they’re resilient, and appropriate for a wide variety of applications.

Once popular exclusively in bathrooms is tile walls and it’s a trend that’s becoming more popular in other rooms. Care will be needed to ensure that the size of the floor tiles and those of the wall are appropriately matched so one doesn’t overwhelm the other.

Before committing to a specific tile size, it’s helpful to consult with a flooring specialist. They can provide assistance with choosing the appropriate tile size to accomplish specific goals, whether it’s making a room appear larger or cozier.
