04 Oct How Often Should Carpeting be Replaced
Most manufacturers say carpeting will last for 10 years – with the proper care. However, the lifespan of carpeting is reliant upon other factors as well. It will depend on how much traffic the carpet receives and the type of material from which it was made. By the end of 10 years, the carpet will begin showing definite signs that it needs to be replaced.
The fibers will lay down, lose their resilience and begin to mat. It may develop rips or tears and show excess signs of wear in high traffic areas. Rips and tears can be dangerous, especially on stairways, where they can cause slip and fall accidents.
Smells and Odors
Carpeting will collect odors, but a good cleaning should remedy the problem and make it smell fresh and clean. If the odors remain after the cleaning, its an indication that the smells have penetrated into the carpet fibers, the padding or even the subflooring. It can also be an indicator of mold growth.
Allergies
Carpeting that’s been on the floor too long can exacerbate allergy symptoms. Older carpeting traps and hold allergens better than newer carpet.
Stains
A wide range of substances can be tracked into homes by people and pets. Young children spill things. When carpeting develops deep down stains that can’t be removed, it’s time to replace the carpet. Wine, tea, food and condiments like mustard create the most stubborn stains.
Water
Any carpeting that’s been exposed to flood water must be replaced. Even a broken or leaky pipe can result in damage. Carpeting that’s been wet for 72 hours or more must also be replaced. The moisture promotes mold growth that’s dangerous to health.
Age
There are multiple signs of a carpet that’s at the end of its lifespan and ready to be replaced. The color will fade and it may develop ripples or wrinkles.
