What is Travertine Tile?

Highly elegant in appearance, travertine is quickly becoming one of the most desirable flooring materials on the market. It’s a type of limestone with unique and distinctive swirl patterns. The patterns in the natural stone are created by minerals that enter the stone from natural springs.

Quarries

Originally quarried in Italy, it’s also found globally. Travertine still comes from Italy, along with countries that includes Iran, Mexico, Peru and Turkey. It’s also found in the U.S., but not mined. The largest deposit is located in Yellowstone National Park.

Cost and Usage

It’s used for flooring, along with kitchens and showers. The stone is also used as a decorative element for walls and ceilings. There’s a myriad of outdoor uses that includes patios, pool decks, driveways, and walkways.

Cost

On the low end of the scale, travertine tile can cost as little as $2 to $4 per square ft. The highest quality travertine tile will run $20 to #30 per square ft. The cost will depend on the grade of stone that’s purchased. It’s available in four finishes.

Residential Flooring

Types of Travertine

Brushed travertine offers a matte, non-reflective finish. Honed travertine has a subtly polished appearance that’s half way between matte and glossy. Polished travertine has the glossy and sophisticated look of high-end stone. Tumbled travertine has an aged appearance.

Benefits

Travertine offers unique and classical beauty and an affordable option compared to other types of stone. It increases the value of homes and businesses, offers a non-slip surface, and can be cut in multiple ways. Travertine tends to stay cool, which is a distinct advantage in South Florida’s climate.

Disadvantages

The stone must be sealed to provide moisture resistance and will need to be resealed every 3 to 5 years. Travertine is a relatively soft stone when compared to granite and similar options. Sensitive to acidic substances, any spilled liquids such as coffee, alcohol and fruit juices are likely to leave a stain.
